Whole Wheat Buttermilk Biscuits

  • 3 Tbsp SACO Cultured Buttermilk Blend
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp granulated sugar
  • ⅓ cup solid vegetable shortening
  • ⅔ cup water
  1. Preheat oven to 450°F.
  2. In large mixing bowl stir together dry ingredients.
  3. Cut in shortening thoroughly until mixture resembles cornmeal.
  4. Add water and mix until dough is pliable.
  5. Do not overbeat.
  6. Turn dough out onto lightly-floured surface and knead gently for about 30 seconds (20 to 25 times).  Roll or pat ½ inch thick, no less.
  7. Cut with floured biscuit cutter.
  8. Place close together on ungreased baking sheet.
  9. Bake 10 to 12 minutes, or until golden brown.
